Happy New Moment!
January 1
Midnight January 1 - for some it's a time to look forward to the year ahead.
For others it's an opportunity for a fresh start and to draw a line under the previous year.
Or it can be experienced as just another moment where you're tuned in to what's happening right now.
The memories of last year, whether good, bad or something else, are thoughts in your head. They can be helpful to replay if it gives you joy, or can evoke pain if the thought triggers a negative emotion. Either way, the moment has passed and it's now just the thought you are having, not the experience itself.
It's similar with thinking about the year ahead. You're not experiencing the future moment yet, it's just a thought in your head.
It may sound obvious, but it's worth being aware that they're just thoughts. Sometimes we can get so lost in those thoughts that it feels almost real.
And more likely than not, when you're having these thoughts your attention is focused on your mind and you're not aware of what's happening right now.
You can't be focused on the thoughts in your mind, and what’s happening around you, both at the same time.
So instead of continuously thinking about what’s already happened in the past, or incessantly worrying about what might happen in the future, take a deep breath and check out what's happening right in front of you.
As Ferris said, " Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
Happy new moment!
